A Message from the Head of Lower School: Thank You!
Here we are in the last weeks of school. It is hard to believe the year is quickly coming to a close. I could not have asked for a more pleasant group of students, parents and faculty to work with during my inaugural year as the Head of Lower School. I look forward to watching your children flourish and grow as we embark upon new exciting ventures here at St. Francis. Thank you for a wonderful year.

Sincerely,
Elisse Hayes-Karlsson

A Message from the Head of Lower School: Summer Fun!

As I visit with the students before school begins in the morning, they share with me the same excitement I felt as a child with the end of school in sight. I believe I started my countdown to summer soon after spring break. My summers in Houston were filled with time at the ranch, sleepovers, trips to Astroworld (RIP), being dropped off at Town and Country for all-day movie viewings, roller skating at the Carousel Roller Rink, running around the original family funplex—Fame City—and bowling on Bunker Hill. I know I am showing my age, but those were the days!

While summer is a time for family and fun, it is also important to stimulate the mind and maintain a certain level of structure. Below you will find some fun websites that your children can use for enrichment throughout the summer. This is just a sampling of the many resources available to engage your child in continued learning over the summer.

http://funschool.kaboose.com
http://www.funbrain.com
http://www.internet4classrooms.com
http://www.factmonster.com
http://www.playkidsgames.com
http://pbskids.org
http://www.scholastic.com/parents/play/games
http://spellingcity.com

I hope your children have fun exploring these amusing sites, and I wish you all a safe and happy summer filled with great times!

Blessings,
Elisse Hayes-Karlsson

Click here to access the brochure and registration forms for both programs.

New Dates! Lower School Birthday Chapels
Please note that the information in last week’s Wolf Watch concerning the remaining Lower School Birthday Chapels contained an error. The following dates are correct:

  • Birthdays that take place from May 15 to May 21 will be recognized during chapel on Monday, May 16.
  • The remaining May birthdays (May 22–31) and June birthdays will be recognized during chapel on Monday, May 23.
  • July birthdays will be recognized during chapel on Wednesday, May 25.
  • August birthdays will be celebrated when we return to school in August.

Rising Fifth Graders—Community Service Hours and Graduating with Distinction
Students entering Middle School next year will want to keep in mind that to graduate “With Distinction,” they need to complete a minimum number of service hours during their Middle School years:

Fifth Grade—10 hours
Sixth Grade—10 hours
Seventh Grade—15 hours
Eighth Grade—20 hours

Demonstrating that they are “people for others” is the only way that students may graduate “With Distinction” at St. Francis.

Lower School Parent Lunches
Parent lunches are the first and third Tuesday of each month. The last day for parent lunches this year is May 17.

Please note that due to overcrowding in the Dining Hall, we are now asking all parents and visitors at our Lower School Parent Lunches to sit with their child in the People Place.

¡Los Lobos tienen éxito en el Examen Nacional otra vez!
Congratulations to the 75 seventh-grade and 45 eighth-grade students who participated in the 2011 National Spanish Exam, which is a two-part exam that is administered online. The achievement portion tests grammar and vocabulary, and the proficiency portion tests listening and reading comprehension. Attaining a medal or honorable mention is very prestigious, because the exam is the largest of its kind given in the United States. In fact, 140,373 students participated this year!
