The humanities program in Lower School is the launching point for anything related to English, language arts, and social studies. This complete integration approach provides the opportunity for students to engage in inquiry-based, creative, authentic, real-world projects that draw on personal experiences, inspire connections through cross-curricular integration and student-driven inquiry, allow the opportunity to problem-solve ethical and moral dilemmas, and teach explicit, active reading strategies with an emphasis on analysis of primary and secondary sources as well as supporting literature for each topic.
Language arts instruction helps students develop the strategies and skills they need to comprehend and communicate effectively. Students are taught explicit skill instruction through the balanced literacy approach, engaging in read-alouds with accountable talk, differentiated word work, and a holistic understanding and application of grammar and mechanics. In addition, students become empowered readers and writers through the Teachers’ College Workshop approach to instruction.
Social studies instruction in the Lower School is fully integrated within the language arts curriculum. Students are immersed in collaborative and independent learning experiences that promote and stimulate constructivist thinking, allowing them to discover and examine areas of focus and interest—including historical events, people, geography, cultures, social awareness, and governance. These simulations provide an opportunity to experience various perspectives and understand the driving factors of historical decisions (e.g. motivations, thoughts, feelings, etc.).
Our mission is to instill a capacity for communication, empathy, and citizenship through critical thinking, reflection, and appreciation of diverse viewpoints using research-informed best practices. We aim to foster life-long learners, thinkers, collaborators, and communicators. Our goal is to prepare students to accept various perspectives, understand factors that influence decision-making, and be productive members of a global society.
